Custom Query Blocks

A WordPress plugin for displaying posts and terms (e.g., categories) using a Gutenberg block. Works well with posts, pages, custom post types, taxonomies, and terms.

Bonus: archive mapping.

Note: (2021-07-28) The blocks are deprecated as there are better custom query items and the new Query block in WordPress 5.8. Thank you for trying us out.

  • Map your post type archives to a page for customization of the post type archive page.
  • Map your category archives to a page for customization of the term archive page.
  • Map your 404 template to a page and easily customize your 404 page.

View Documentation and Overview

The plugin currently has three blocks:

Post Type Archive Mapping

This plugin allows you to map your custom post type archive pages. Just create a page and go to Settings->Reading to set the page for your archive.

Ensure your post types have has_archive set to true.

  • Select a Public page to use as your post type archive page.
  • View the archive and you will see the page content instead of the archive content.
  • Use page templates on your pages for flexibility.
  • Custom Gutenberg block for showing your posts.

Term Archive Mapping

This plugin also allows you to map your term archives to a page. Just create a page and go edit your term to set the archive page.

  • Create a public page to use as your term archive.
  • Visit the edit term page and select the page.
  • View the term and you will see your selected page.
  • Use Gutenberg on your public page to customize the archive.

404 Page Mapping

This plugin allows you to map a page to your 404 template, so you can customize a 404 page as needed.

  • Setting up the custom post types block.
  • New Term Grid Block.
  • Settings->Reading option.
  • Term archive option.

This plugin provides 3 blocks.

  • Term Grid Show off your terms (categories) in a beautiful and customizable grid.
  • Featured Posts by Term Highlight a term (category) and show the items within it. Perfect for term archives.
  • Custom Posts Show a grid or list layout of custom post type archives that you can narrow down by post type, taxonomy, and term.

  1. Just unzip and upload the “ post-type-archive-mapping” folder to your ‘/wp-content/plugins/’ directory
  2. Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress

Post Type Archive Mapping

  1. Create a custom post type that has an archive
  2. Create a page with a custom template. Use the Gutenberg block to show off posts in that Custom Post Type.
  3. Go to Settings->Reading and assign the page to the custom post type archive
  4. Go to the post type archive and observe the page content is now the archive

Term Archive Mapping

  1. Create a public page to use as your term archive.
  2. Visit the edit term page and select the page.
  3. View the term and you will see your selected page.
  4. Use Gutenberg on your public page to customize the archive.

404 Template Mapping

  1. Visit Settings->Reading and map your 404 template to a page.
  2. Customize the new 404 page.
  3. Navigate to a broken URL to preview the 404 page.

I don’t see the post types. What’s wrong?

Make sure your post type has has_archive set to true and show_in_rest set to true.

Can you do posts instead of pages?

This plugin will only allow mapping to pages.

Does this plugin work with term (e.g., category) archives?

Yes. Edit a term and you can map it to any page.

I need help. Can you help me?

Yes, just post in the support forums here and I’ll do my best to address your issue.

An indispensable plugin for mapping archives to pages, for when archive.php won’t do the trick.

I don’t generally use the archive mapping features, but the Post Query functionality is the best I’ve found. Would love for it to have a ‘No posts found.’ message option on the front-end, other than that it’s great!

Very handy in adding small blocks of posts from a taxonomy. Thanks guys 🙂

I get it, it started as a custom Archive page mapping plugin. And it needed a custom query block to be useful in the block editor era. But the custom query block is useful on its own, and it’s really hard to find. A so useful feature for the block editor should be top priority. Not sure how you could make it work, but both features should be detached. Thanks for sharing your work.

I installed this plugin to run and output custom queries with the Gutenberg block. That aspect of the plugin is beyond fantastic. However, the mapping feature doesn’t make sense (to me) to include.. it seems like it ought to be its own separate plugin. On top of that, there was no way to disable the mapping functionality and it automatically broke all of my archives. Despite having all options for mapping set to ‘default’ my archives would either throw a 404 or return a page outputting ALL post, page and CPT content. I have no reason to create custom archives and the original reason I installed the plugin doesn’t offer enough value to justify the added work of creating and mapping archive pages.

Very useful plugin particularly the archive page mapping feature. Really appreciate the archive mapping feature been looking for a way to do that for months. The term grid ability to draw from any and all CPT taxonomies is putsanding feature. Hopefully a few more embellishments to the grid like images will be added.
